Bakery Clerk

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Bakery Clerk for its bakery department in Dubuque. The role keeps the bakery running smoothly and smells fresh, preparing and replenishing products, helping customers at the counter and creating a welcoming experience. Night and weekend shifts are required. The position is hourly and open to people with no prior experience, as training is provided.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers warmly and assist them with finding products, reaching items, carrying heavy purchases and taking orders at the counter
• Review daily orders and monitor product freshness, appearance and supply levels during the shift
• Prepare, finish and replenish baked goods, pulling product from the cooler or freezer
• Maintain proper sanitation, keep the work area clean and organized, and check in and put away product while reviewing invoices as needed
• Operate the department register to process payments where applicable
• Remove trash promptly and work with teammates to keep the experience positive
• Follow the dress code, hygiene standards and company policies, and help in other store areas and on special projects

Required profile

• No prior experience required; up to six months of similar or related experience preferred
• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent accepted
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to use basic math for simple addition, subtraction, counting and recording
• Clear communication with customers and teammates, staying organized in a busy bakery
• Physical demands: frequent standing and walking, exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes and damp conditions, and use of sharp knives and blades where applicable
