Bakery Cake Designer

About the role

Hy-Vee's Bakery Cake Designer works in the bakery department, using creativity and decorating skills to turn customer ideas into birthday cakes, everyday treats and wedding cakes delivered and set up on site. The role leads part-time employees and works closely with the bakery team to keep production running smoothly. It is an hourly position.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers, take orders at the bakery counter and assist them throughout the store
• Check orders, set up a timeline and production schedule, and review cake orders daily for size, decoration packs, icing needs and dates
• Decorate bakery items, keep up with new designs and trends, and develop daily bakery orders for bakers
• Track daily retail production, check product dates, pull cases and list items to fill or replace
• Order supplies for the decorating area and confirm them on receipt
• Deliver products and set up wedding cakes on site outside the store
• Communicate daily with the Bakery Manager about displays, weekly ads and special needs
• Act as a lead for part-time and other employees, instructing and reviewing their work, and participate in cross-training
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and safe, and answer the phone promptly
• Follow the dress code, hygiene standards and company guidelines, and pitch in with other tasks and special projects

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Six months or less of similar or related work experience; training is provided
• Ability to stand and walk frequently during a shift, and to use sharp knives and blades safely
• Exposure to heat and burn hazards from cooking, baking or grilling equipment
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in line with DOT standards
• Ability to perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching and bending for order fulfillment, POS transactions and cleaning

Required skills

• Strong decorating skills and awareness of cake design trends and techniques
• Math skills including fractions, decimals and percentages
• Leadership of part-time employees and clear communication with customers, co-workers and the Bakery Manager
