Job description
About the role
We are looking for an Automation & Controls Engineer to lead the integration of metallurgical processing equipment into a closed‑loop, AI‑orchestrated experimental platform at Texas A&M Engineering. The role involves translating algorithmic directives into machine actions and feeding structured results back to a Bayesian optimization engine.
Key responsibilities
- Automate vacuum arc melting operations, including electrode positioning, chamber sequencing, power profile control, and ingot extraction.
- Develop and execute automated hot‑rolling workflows with pass schedule control, temperature monitoring, and thickness feedback.
- Automate mechanical testing routines on universal testing machines and hardness testers, handling specimen loading and data capture.
- Design, build, and commission robotic sample‑transfer systems to move specimens between processing, characterization, and testing stations.
- Create Python‑based middleware that receives experimental directives from a Bayesian optimization orchestrator and translates them into coordinated machine actions.
Required profile
- Proven experience automating metallurgical processing equipment.
- Ability to develop software that interfaces with diverse hardware systems.
- Strong problem‑solving skills in a research‑oriented environment.
Required skills
- Python programming
- Bayesian optimization frameworks
