Associate Attorney - General Liability Defense

About the role

Segal McCambridge, a national litigation firm founded in 1986 with offices in more than 20 U.S. cities, is seeking an experienced Associate Attorney for its New York office, focused on general liability defense litigation. The role suits an attorney who wants to own their cases in a collaborative environment with mentorship from experienced trial attorneys, handling challenging, high-exposure matters with support from a national team. It is a hybrid position with a flexible mix of remote work and in-office collaboration.

Key responsibilities

• Handle a diverse caseload of general liability matters, including premises liability, property damage, personal injury defense, construction-related general liability, Child Victim Act, trucking/transportation and other tort and civil litigation.
• Manage cases from inception through resolution or trial.
• Draft pleadings, discovery and motions; take and defend depositions.
• Conduct legal research and develop case strategies.
• Take part in mediations, arbitrations, court conferences and trials.
• Communicate with clients, carriers and opposing counsel, and collaborate with partners and team members on case strategy.

Required profile

• Active license to practice law in New York (required).
• 1+ year of civil litigation experience, ideally with a focus on general liability defense.
• Ability to independently manage multiple cases and deadlines.
• Experience with mediation, arbitration or trial is a plus; dual licensure in another jurisdiction (CT preferred) is a bonus.

• Strong litigation skills: pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions and client reporting.
• Excellent legal writing, research and oral advocacy skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Base salary of $110,000 - $175,000 per year, depending on experience.
