Assistant/Associate Professor of Journalism (Teaching Track)

About the role

The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations to teach undergraduate and graduate journalism and media studies courses starting in the fall 2027 semester. The position is full-time, non-tenured and focused on instruction.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism and media studies, including core reporting and writing, media ethics, digital tools and social media.
• Teach media studies courses such as media history and sports media, and ideally courses in the candidate's areas of strength.
• Expand or deepen the program in innovative ways to meet the needs of the news media industry and students.
• Participate in department, school and university service and committee work.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in journalism, communication or a related field.
• Professional journalism experience.
• Demonstrated teaching ability.
• Ability to teach a 24-credit-hour load per year; appointments start with a two-year term, then a three-year term, then five-year terms on a rolling basis.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the digital, technological, ethical and economic landscape of journalism.
• Understanding of best practices for reporting, producing and distributing stories across platforms.
• Excellent digital communication and writing skills.
• Preferred: sports media knowledge and a background in mass communication theory.
