Assistant Professor of Music (Cello)

About the role

The Department of Music at St. Olaf College seeks a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Music specializing in cello, beginning August 2027. The position combines high‑level performance, teaching, and service within a vibrant liberal‑arts community.

Key responsibilities

• Provide applied cello lessons to music majors and non‑majors.
• Teach string technique courses and coach chamber ensembles.
• Develop and teach courses aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise.
• Offer academic advising to undergraduate students.
• Participate in department‑wide and college‑wide service activities.
• Potentially direct the St. Olaf Philharmonia Orchestra if possessing conducting experience.

Required profile

• Emerging national presence as a teacher‑artist with demonstrated ability to perform and teach cello across diverse musical styles.
• Active involvement in the string community and a record of fostering an inclusive undergraduate studio culture.
• Evidence of successful recruitment and retention of students.
• DMA or equivalent performance experience; prior collegiate teaching experience preferred.
