Assistant Professor of Mathematics (Applied Mathematics)

About the role

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cal Poly Pomona is seeking an Assistant Professor with expertise in applied mathematics, with a preference for candidates specializing in nonlinear optimization, the mathematics of machine learning or stochastic modeling. The position is tenured/tenure-track, full time and on-site in Pomona, California.

Key responsibilities

• Teach mathematics and/or statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level
• Engage in scholarly research or grant activity
• Serve on department, college and university committees
• Mentor undergraduate research and graduate student master's thesis projects

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or a closely related field, conferred by the start date of the position
• University or college teaching experience in mathematics (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant)
• Evidence of ongoing or potential scholarly research in applied mathematics or a related area
• Demonstrated potential to teach upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level applied mathematics courses

Preferred qualifications

• Research expertise in applied mathematics, particularly nonlinear optimization, machine learning mathematics or stochastic modeling
• Evidence of excellence in teaching
• Potential to direct master's thesis students, contribute to department governance and mentor first-generation college students
