Assistant Manager - Store Operations

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring an Assistant Manager of Store Operations in Madison. The role supervises and coordinates the activities of employees and ensures customers' needs are met. It reports to the District Store Director and the Store Manager, and covers the General function, with options for Perishables, Health Wellness and Home departments. The position is exempt under FLSA.

Key responsibilities

• Set a friendly, efficient tone for customers and employees, greet customers by name where possible, and help them find products, load or unload heavy items and pass on their suggestions.
• Oversee training, handle employee issues and coordinate disciplinary procedures; evaluate employee performance and recommend promotions, transfers or dismissal.
• Assist management with pricing and blends, and determine the location of ad and promotional displays so that product quality and quantities meet demand and profitability.
• Ensure compliance with store accounting procedures, store standards for customer service and employee relations, and building, ground maintenance and sanitation.
• Order merchandise, coordinate compliance with policies, security, sales and record-keeping procedures, and forecast and review the labor schedule.
• Train and enforce safety procedures, fill out accident and injury forms, and work safely within physical restrictions.
• Recruit and interview applicants, recommend hires, and provide continuous education to existing employees.
• Handle cash registers, sell merchandise to employees and customers, and purchase merchandise and supplies and order equipment repairs.

Required profile

• High school or equivalent education.
• One year or more of retail experience, including performing the duties of an Assistant Manager.
• Ability to solve practical problems, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and interview people.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently, and to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, pull and lift.

The work is fast-paced and exposes the employee to dust, noise, temperature extremes, moving equipment, electrical shock and chemicals. Employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen.
