Assistant Director of Athletics Communications

About the role

The Assistant Director of Athletics Communications supports the Department of Athletics by managing public relations, media coverage, and multimedia content for assigned sports. Reporting to the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications, this role serves as a key liaison among coaches, student‑athletes, administrators, and the media.

Key responsibilities

• Provide game coverage, including pre‑ and post‑game media efforts and statistical dissemination.
• Coordinate media relations, secure event coverage, and develop feature stories on student‑athletes and teams.
• Create and edit online and printed materials such as guides, game programs, and press releases.
• Contribute content to the athletics website, manage web streaming, video editing, and social‑media initiatives.
• Maintain historical archives of team records, photos, and statistics.
• Collaborate daily with the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications and other Sports Information staff.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field.
• At least one year of full‑time experience in sports information or athletic communications within intercollegiate athletics (preferred).
• Strong writing, interpersonal communication, and computer skills.
• Willingness to work significant overtime, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Required skills

• Desktop publishing tools such as Adobe Creative Suite.
• Statistical software for sports (e.g., Stat Crew).
• Video editing proficiency.
