Academic Advisor I

About the role

The Academic Advisor I supports undergraduate students in achieving their academic and career objectives. Working within Texas A&M AgriLife Research’s Dean’s Office, the advisor builds relationships, clarifies program requirements, and helps retain students across a variety of science majors.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with students to set realistic educational goals and explore majors, minors, graduate options, and career pathways.
• Guide students through registration, add/drop, withdrawals, curriculum changes, and transfer credit decisions, explaining university policies and program requirements.
• Review academic records, advise on course selection, and provide input on probation and exception requests.
• Maintain accurate advising notes and student contact records.
• Implement outreach strategies (in‑person and online) to engage students and promote retention.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience in higher‑education advising.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective student interaction.
• Ability to interpret academic policies and convey them clearly.
• Detail‑oriented with solid record‑keeping abilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of university academic regulations and degree requirements.
• Familiarity with student information and registration systems.
• Experience providing academic counseling and support.
