6-12 Literacy Specialist

About the role

Kearsley Community Schools is seeking a highly qualified 6-12 Literacy Specialist to lead and support literacy instruction for grades 6‑12. The specialist will work within the district’s Multi‑Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and align practices with Michigan’s K‑12 Literacy and Dyslexia Law.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and systems support to strengthen literacy instruction across secondary grades.
• Develop and align vertically coherent literacy practices to improve Tier 1 instruction.
• Lead the creation of secondary IRIPs in compliance with state law.
• Facilitate structured‑literacy focused PLCs and professional development.
• Coach teachers on evidence‑based literacy interventions and structured‑literacy practices.
• Serve on district and building committees related to MTSS, school improvement, and literacy implementation.
• Support onboarding and mentoring of new secondary teachers.

Required profile

• Experience using the MTSS framework to deliver successful student interventions.
• Knowledge of evidence‑based intervention approaches for each MTSS academic tier.
• Commitment to student‑centered instruction and supporting at‑risk learners.

Required skills

• LETRS certification, Orton‑Gillingham or similar structured‑literacy training.
• Experience with diagnostic assessment tools.
• Ability to design and deliver staff training and professional learning experiences.
