Vice Provost - Research Development

About the role

The Vice Provost for Research Development (VPRD) reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Research and provides strategic leadership for Northeastern’s research enterprise, aiming to boost global reputation and achieve ambitious funding goals.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a research development strategy aligned with a $500 M funding target and global reputation objectives.
• Build university‑wide networks to increase the quality, efficiency and scale of research proposals, including large‑scale center grants and multi‑investigator programs.
• Monitor national funding trends, translate intelligence into actionable opportunities, and coordinate Horizon Europe and UKRI efforts.
• Lead, develop and manage the research development team, establishing KPIs, performance reviews and staffing plans.
• Cultivate faculty coalitions, support complex proposal development and advise on sponsor priorities.
• Evaluate and improve systems for pipeline tracking, reporting, compliance and limited‑submission programs.

Required profile

• Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant field (or equivalent graduate degree with senior leadership experience).
• 5‑7 years of progressive leadership experience in research development at a research‑intensive university.
• Proven record of securing large, competitive grants and building multi‑disciplinary faculty coalitions.
• Strong management skills, including workload planning, performance metrics and staff development.
• Excellent communication and networking abilities across a complex institutional environment.
