Veterinarian – Canine Recovery & Rehabilitation Center

About the role

The ASPCA's Recovery & Rehabilitation (R&R) Center in Pawling, NY provides integrated sheltering, behavioral and medical care for canines rescued from cruelty, working closely with ASPCA teams in New York City on animals rescued with the NYPD. The Veterinarian provides high-quality veterinary care to recovering canines, attends to both individual animals and the shelter population, and reports directly to the Senior Director, Veterinary Services with no direct reports. The role is on-site, Sunday through Wednesday 8am-6pm, with a flexible schedule and up to 10% travel.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver timely, practical veterinary care following ASPCA protocols, R&R SOPs and shelter medicine best practices, including direct patient care and low-stress diagnostics and treatment plans.
• Perform HVHQSN surgeries, dental procedures and other surgical procedures with appropriate anesthesia and multimodal analgesia.
• Administer vaccines and preventatives per protocol, and guide and perform humane euthanasia when needed.
• Take part in daily rounds with behavior and sheltering staff, monitor the shelter population for disease outbreaks and use quarantine and isolation appropriately.
• Work with partner clinics and hospitals, complete veterinary inspection certificates for transfers, and provide expert testimony in court if requested.
• Maintain veterinary records, chain of custody and evidence disposition records, and keep confidential criminal case information.
• Train and mentor staff on shelter disease control, nutrition, vaccination schedules and shelter medicine protocols.
• Travel up to 10% of the time and follow OSHA and ASPCA safety protocols.

• Target hiring salary of $148,000 - $156,000 annually, with possible signing bonus and/or relocation stipend.
