Veterinary Assistant

About the role

The ASPCA's Recovery & Rehabilitation (R&R) Center in Pawling, NY provides integrated sheltering, behavioral and medical care for canines rescued from cruelty, working with ASPCA teams in New York City. The Veterinary Assistant provides high-quality veterinary care to recovering canines, reports directly to the Manager, Veterinary Services Staff and has no direct reports. It is an in-person position with a 4-day week (8am-6pm, including at least one weekend day) and up to 5% travel.

Key responsibilities

• Create a safe, compassionate environment using low-stress handling techniques and observe animals for illness, injury or poor welfare
• Support exams, surgery, specimen collection and humane euthanasia, and monitor patients after surgery
• Administer oral and topical medication under a veterinarian's direction, following state and federal law
• Clean and disinfect kennels and equipment, feed and medicate animals, and keep medical areas stocked
• Document findings and results, maintain chain of custody and dispose of forensic evidence properly
• Take part in daily rounds, meetings and reporting of time worked and expenses

Required profile

• Valid driver's license and ability to pass a motor vehicle history check
• Able to witness animals suffering medically or behaviorally and comfortable with humane euthanasia
• Physical stamina: lifting 50 pounds alone and 100 pounds with assistance, and wearing PPE
• Willingness to work evenings, holidays and a flexible schedule

Required skills

• Fluent use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Familiarity with shelter software or Salesforce is a plus
