About the role
The Georgia State Government seeks a Veterans Field Service Officer (VSO1) to provide essential support to veterans, their families, and survivors. Working from the Valdosta office, you will guide clients through VA benefit claims, ensure accurate documentation, and connect them with critical community resources.
Key responsibilities
- Assist veterans in filing and managing claims for compensation, pension, education, health care, and survivor benefits.
- Interpret and apply Title 38 U.S. Code, VA regulations, and state policies.
- Review military service records and medical documentation to identify service‑connected conditions such as PTSD, TBI, Agent Orange‑related illnesses, and burn‑pit exposure.
- Coordinate with VA officials, health‑care providers, and legal representatives; act as an advocate during claims and appeals.
- Conduct outreach events, deliver presentations, and educate veterans and families about benefit eligibility.
- Manage cases using the Unite Us system and refer veterans to housing, mental‑health, and employment services.
Required profile
- High school diploma/GED plus at least 60 semester hours of college coursework.
- Minimum one year of case‑management experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a PIV card after a NAC‑I background check.
- Successful completion of the TRIP (Training Responsibility Involvement Preparation of Claims) test and attendance at annual training.
Required skills
- Knowledge of federal VA regulations (Title 38) and related state policies.
- Familiarity with medical terminology for common veteran conditions.
- Case‑management proficiency, including use of the Unite Us platform.
- Strong communication and advocacy abilities.
