Upward Bound Academic Advisor

About the role

The Upward Bound Academic Advisor supports disadvantaged high‑school students by providing academic counseling, college admission guidance, and coordinating enrichment activities. Reporting to the Associate Director and Program Director, the advisor works both in schools and on field trips.

Key responsibilities

• Recruit participants through presentations at target schools and community events, and verify eligibility.
• Develop individual academic plans, evaluate transcripts, and monitor attendance and performance.
• Maintain weekly office hours at Oakland and/or Richmond high schools and act as liaison with parents, schools, and post‑secondary institutions.
• Plan, chaperone, and oversee summer residential programs, college tours, workshops, and field trips.
• Provide financial‑aid counseling and administer college‑seminar sessions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Minimum two years of experience with a U.S. Department of Education TRiO program or similar.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and reside onsite with students during summer programs.
• Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience using student‑services databases (e.g., Student Access Database).
