Tax Associate, State and Local Tax

About the role

KPMG is seeking a Tax Associate to join its State & Local Tax practice in Sacramento. You will work with multi‑state clients on a variety of tax compliance, consulting, and planning projects, gaining exposure to complex business transactions and emerging technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Assist multi‑state companies with state and local tax issues, including income/franchise, sales/use, excise, and property tax compliance, consulting, planning, and controversies.
• Support business tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, and identify state and local tax savings opportunities arising from legal entity changes.
• Research and draft state and local tax technical memoranda.
• Assist with M&A transactions involving acquisitions and dispositions of equity interests or business assets.
• Supervise shared services team members and interns, coordinating notices and shared resources.
• Analyze, prepare, and review tax workpapers, returns, estimated payments, and extensions while staying current on legislative developments.
• Develop capabilities in AI‑enabled tools, Alteryx, Power BI, and other technologies to enhance client service delivery.
• Collaborate within a multi‑disciplinary team to build and maintain strong client relationships.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in accounting, finance, taxation, mathematics, economics, information technology, data and analytics, engineering, or a related field, obtained within the past 12 months.
• Pursuing CPA licensure in the state of employment, with required academic credits completed before the start date.
• Preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data analytics is a plus.
• Strong tax research abilities and solid business acumen.
