About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking a Student Support Specialist to help newly‑arrived refugee students and their families integrate into the Abilene Independent School District. The role focuses on academic case management, coordination of support services, and fostering successful school experiences.
Key responsibilities
- Assess each refugee student’s educational background and identify barriers to academic success.
- Develop individualized educational service plans in collaboration with parents and school staff.
- Orient students and families to the U.S. education system and AISD regulations.
- Connect students with tutoring resources and refer them to IRC or external services for medical and social support.
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer mentors for academic coaching and group‑based programming.
- Plan and facilitate group meetings, Spring Break and Summer Academy activities, and maintain program schedules.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding, safety, and security policies.
- Maintain accurate student files, case notes, and program data in the ETO system.
- Produce regular reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Required profile
- Experience working with refugee, immigrant, or culturally diverse student populations.
- Strong understanding of the U.S. K‑12 education system and ability to navigate school district policies.
- Excellent communication skills for regular interaction with parents, teachers, and partners.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, coordinate volunteers, and organize group programming.
- Commitment to safeguarding and confidentiality standards.
Required skills
- Knowledge of U.S. education regulations and school district procedures.
- Familiarity with case management and data entry systems (e.g., ETO).
- Ability to develop educational service plans and coordinate tutoring resources.
- Experience delivering group‑based training and mentorship programs.
