Student Support Specialist – Academic Integration

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking a Student Support Specialist to help refugee students and their families integrate academically and civically within the Abilene Independent School District. This role focuses on removing barriers to education and fostering academic success for newly arrived students.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the educational background of refugee students and create individualized educational service plans.
• Develop academic support plans together with parents and coordinate orientation on the U.S. education system and AISD regulations.
• Connect students with tutoring resources and refer them to IRC or external partners for medical and social support.
• Train, supervise, and support volunteer mentors for group‑based academic coaching.
• Plan and facilitate group programming, including Spring Break and Summer Academy activities.
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding, safety, and security policies.
• Monitor student attendance and maintain regular communication with parents or caregivers.
• Provide cultural and refugee‑specific training to educational partners.
• Maintain program documentation, data collection systems, and contribute to internal and external reporting.
