Strategic Communications Intern

About the role

The Strategic Communications Intern will support the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Branch in translating technical policy work into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences. The position is full‑time, unpaid, and based at the UN premises in New York.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing and implementing strategic communications and outreach activities for the DDR Branch.
• Draft, edit, proofread and copy‑edit a range of knowledge products, including web stories, articles, newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, reports, presentations and talking points.
• Support the design and production of visual communications such as infographics, fact sheets, presentations, social media assets and other digital materials, ensuring UN branding and accessibility standards.
• Maintain and update the DDR Branch’s web presence, improving presentation and accessibility of information.
• Create content for social media and digital channels, highlighting DDR activities, results, events and partnerships.
• Explore innovative digital storytelling tools and visualise data through charts, maps and diagrams.
• Assist with communications for events, conferences and campaigns, including promotional materials and post‑event communications.
• Research and gather stories, best practices and lessons learned from colleagues, field presences and partners for internal and external dissemination.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or having completed a graduate programme, or in the final academic year of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
• Fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of French is an advantage.
• Ability to draft news articles and social media posts; ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
