Staff Backend Engineer (Rails)

About the role

Tread is building an AI‑native SaaS platform for construction materials logistics. As a Staff Backend Engineer you will own the end‑to‑end backend systems that power dispatch, ticketing, settlements and integrations, working closely with frontend, mobile, product and forward‑deployed engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design and manage state machines for projects, orders, jobs and loads.
• Operate a telematics data layer tracking thousands of trucks across North America, handling billions of rows of live position and route history.
• Implement geofencing and geo‑driven event processing to turn raw GPS data into structured dispatch events.
• Build algorithmic dispatch and optimization, including automated load assignment.
• Run the payments stack that settles roughly $1 billion per month in hauler payouts.
• Ship customer‑facing agentic workflows leveraging the MCP and LLM features.
• Create integrations with telematics providers, scale houses, ERPs and other external systems.
• Shape internal AI tooling, including shared agent skills, automated review and prompt infrastructure.

Required profile

• Strong experience with Ruby on Rails or a comparable backend framework and ability to ramp quickly.
• Systems thinking mindset – you design interfaces, schemas, invariants and handle failure modes at scale.
• Proven ability to model workflows where the source of truth may be unreliable while still achieving correct settlement.
• High ownership and comfort using AI‑assisted coding tools daily.
