Staff Attorney – Housing (Elmura)

About the role

The Elmira office of LawNY® is seeking a full‑time Staff Attorney to join its Housing Unit. The attorney will primarily represent low‑income clients in eviction‑defense matters, providing compassionate legal support during crisis situations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a full‑time caseload of eligible clients in the Eviction Prevention Unit.
• Develop expertise in landlord‑tenant law, subsidized housing, and related government benefits.
• Provide advice, negotiation, litigation, and administrative advocacy on housing issues.
• Collaborate with fellow advocates, human‑service providers, non‑profits, courts and community groups.
• Participate in grant reporting, timekeeping, case management and compliance activities.
• Attend training, seminars and conferences to stay current on poverty‑law developments.

Required profile

• Admission to practice law and good standing in New York State.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving low‑income populations.
• Excellent oral and written communication abilities.

What we offer

• Salary range $75,000 – $111,100 USD per year, based on experience.
• Eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
