Software Engineer II – Back-end (Card Management & Transaction Processing)

About the role

Affirm is expanding its fast‑growing card products and needs a back‑end engineer to build and operate the core issuing and transaction processing systems. You will work on the critical path of every card transaction, collaborating with product, design and analytics teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Break down large projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and ensure timely delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to define requirements, articulate technical constraints, and make informed trade‑offs.
• Maintain and monitor system metrics, support on‑call duties, and help keep services highly available.
• Participate in code reviews, provide feedback, and help improve the overall code base.
• Engage in team growth activities such as interviewing and knowledge sharing.

Required profile

• At least 1.5 years of experience as a software engineer.
• Proven ability to design, develop, and launch backend systems.
• Comfortable navigating large code bases, debugging, and reviewing peers' code.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for global collaboration.
• Self‑driven attitude toward personal growth and proactive feedback seeking.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin.
• Experience with AWS cloud services.
• Knowledge of MySQL databases.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes for container orchestration.
