Software and Data Engineer

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology seeks a Software and Data Engineer to work closely with network engineers and DNS root operators. The role involves designing, planning, and implementing software tools that improve network productivity, reliability, and support for the MAX and DNS "D" root services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain software utilities for network management and MAX server environment.
• Collaborate daily with network engineers to create repeatable solutions for common software and data needs.
• Participate in conference calls and meetings with global DNS root operators to address disruptions and support root server expansion.
• Produce support documentation and maintain existing C code bases.
• Perform occasional physical tasks such as racking and stacking servers up to 50 lb.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent experience).
• At least three years of professional experience in network design, implementation, and escalation support.
• Valid driver’s license for state vehicle operation.
• Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, or shift work as needed, especially during emergencies.

Required skills

• Knowledge of core WAN networking design and scalable networks.
• Experience with DNS infrastructure and root services.
• Proficiency in C language code maintenance.
• Server management and support experience.
• Hands‑on experience with Ciena and Cisco networking equipment.
• Understanding of fiber optics, OSP, and OTDR testing.
• Competence with Google Workspace tools.
