Senior Underwriter – US & Bermuda Markets

About the role

Soter, a regulated specialty insurer backed by leading investors, is expanding its US footprint. The Senior Underwriter will own the US book across six lines, lead complex risk assessments, and shape distribution and pricing for digital‑asset custodians, exchanges, and related financial institutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead underwriting for D&O, PI/E&O, Crime, Specie/Custody, Slashing/Staking and Cyber, from submission to bind, exercising delegated authority.
• Develop and maintain broker relationships across the US specialty market, including surplus‑lines and fronting structures.
• Design multi‑line, hybrid‑currency programmes (USD, BTC, ETH) and bespoke solutions for non‑standard exposures.
• Assess custody architectures (MPC, HSM, multi‑sig), smart‑contract audits, validator operations and governance to produce CTO‑level risk conclusions.
• Draft, negotiate and approve policy wordings, endorsements and manuscript amendments.
• Collaborate with the Lead Pricing Actuary on model calibration and portfolio aggregation across lines.
• Conduct client risk assessments, KYC/CRA and sanctions screening in line with Bermuda regulations.
• Mentor junior underwriters, improve guidelines and contribute to AI‑assisted underwriting tools.

Required profile

• 7+ years specialty or commercial lines underwriting, including at least 3 years in financial lines or specie, with proven authority and profitable results.
• Hands‑on experience drafting and negotiating policy wordings and endorsements.
• Direct involvement in creating or reshaping insurance products or programmes.
• Working knowledge of the US specialty market, surplus‑lines and fronting structures.
• Deep understanding of digital‑asset custody models, exchange operations, staking economics and related regulatory landscape.
• Ability to discuss technical details with CTOs, security auditors or regulators and form independent judgments.
• Comfort underwriting risks with limited loss history and documenting reasoning clearly.
• Excellent written communication for referral memos and broker correspondence.
