Senior Manager – State Income Tax Consulting

About the role

KPMG is seeking a Senior Manager to join its State and Local Tax (SALT) practice. You will work within a national, multi‑disciplinary team delivering complex state income tax consulting services to high‑profile clients. The role offers exposure to a broad range of tax issues, technology‑driven solutions, and mentorship opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with a national tax consulting team on organizational structure optimization, refund identification, and technology solution development.
• Lead state tax return review engagements to secure state income tax refunds.
• Assist multinational companies with state and local tax controversies, including audit preparation, representation at hearings, and protest filing.
• Review technical memoranda and slide decks on income, franchise, and other state tax matters.
• Build and manage client relationships while supervising, mentoring, and developing managers and associates.

Required profile

• Minimum eight years of recent experience leading state income tax return review projects and providing technical advice on multi‑state tax issues.
• Bachelor’s degree and a CPA, EA, JD/LLM, or another approved KPMG credential (or ability to obtain one within one year of hire).
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams delivering state and local income tax consulting services.
• Strong business development and relationship‑building skills.
• Excellent writing, compliance, communication, management, and tax research abilities.
