Senior Construction Engineer

About the role

The Senior Construction Engineer will lead technical oversight for California transportation infrastructure projects, acting as Resident Engineer or Structures Representative on federally funded contracts. The role ensures construction activities meet quality, safety, schedule and budget targets while complying with client, regulatory and Bureau Veritas requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily field operations, perform engineering reviews, inspections and approvals.
• Serve as the Structures Representative/Resident Engineer and technical authority for assigned contracts.
• Coordinate with Caltrans, contractors, agencies and other stakeholders, facilitating meetings and documenting action items.
• Conduct quality‑assurance inspections to verify compliance with Caltrans standards, Title 24 and Cal/OSHA regulations.
• Prepare, negotiate and support change orders, contract administration and claims management.
• Perform engineering calculations, quantity take‑offs, stress analyses and surveying verification.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license and a valid Class C driver’s license.
• Minimum five years of construction engineering experience on large‑scale infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated ability to manage contracts, change orders and dispute resolution.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Caltrans Standard Plans, Specifications and Construction Manual.
• Structural calculations, quantity take‑offs, surveying verification and engineering analysis.
• Project management and construction oversight tools.
• Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam and other plan‑review software.
• ProTrack, Quickbase or equivalent project‑tracking platforms.
