Security Officer – Campus Safety

About the role

The Security Officer ensures the safety and security of the Carleton College community, its members, and physical property. This full‑time position serves as the first responder for medical, criminal, fire, and maintenance emergencies on campus.

Key responsibilities

• Provide first‑aid treatment, triage, and transportation for medical and psychological emergencies.
• Respond to criminal incidents, conduct on‑site investigations, and notify law‑enforcement as required.
• Handle fire, intrusion, mechanical, panic‑alarm, and emergency‑telephone alerts; assist with fire drills and monthly AED tests.
• Enforce Carleton College policies, issue emergency notifications via CarlAlert, and maintain physical security of all buildings.
• Monitor and manage access‑control and video‑surveillance systems, issue after‑hours badges, and generate alarm reports.
• Address after‑hours maintenance requests for college‑owned facilities.

Required profile

• Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
• Strong communication skills for notifying administrators and coordinating with external agencies.
• Attention to detail in enforcing policies and completing documentation.

Required skills

• Experience with access‑control system software.
• Familiarity with video‑surveillance equipment.
• Basic knowledge of AED operation and emergency‑telephone systems.
