Firefighter 3/C Cadet

About the role

The Firefighter 3/C Cadet position is an entry‑level, on‑site role with Albuquerque Fire Rescue. Selected candidates will undergo intensive training with the Fire Rescue Training Division to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to serve as a professional firefighter and emergency medical technician.

Key responsibilities

• Learn and apply City of Albuquerque and Albuquerque Fire Rescue policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Complete the 19‑week (EMT‑B or higher) or 28‑week (non‑EMT) Fire Academy and become a State‑certified Firefighter II.
• Participate in fire suppression, wildland firefighting, hazardous‑materials response, technical rescue, and incident‑command operations.
• Deliver emergency medical services as an EMT‑Basic or higher, following established protocols.
• Maintain physical fitness standards and adhere to safety guidelines at all times.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; must be at least 18 years old by academy start date.
• U.S. citizen or legal resident; valid driver’s license (Class E NM license required within 30 days of hire).
• Veterans must provide an Honorable or General discharge under Honorable conditions.
• Ability to meet academic, physical, and training standards set by Albuquerque Fire Rescue.

Required skills

• EMT‑Basic certification (or willingness to obtain it during training).
• Firefighter II certification (State of New Mexico).
• Valid Class E driver’s license.
• Knowledge of hazardous‑materials response and technical rescue techniques.
