About the role
The Research Technician I provides entry‑level, semi‑skilled technical support for the Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab. The position supports the South Texas Ocelot Research Program, working primarily at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge with housing provided.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor GPS‑collared ocelots, bobcats and coyotes to detect denning behavior and respond to mortality events.
- Place, maintain and classify remote camera images at suspected den sites.
- Lead teams to locate dens, collar bobcat kittens, and operate box traplines for ocelots, bobcats and small mammals.
- Conduct chemical immobilizations, collect biological samples, and assist with other carnivore fieldwork from December through April.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent with at least two years of related field experience.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to work on private and federal lands.
- Physical capacity to hike several miles daily, lift heavy equipment and work in >90 °C heat.
Required skills
- Telemetry monitoring and VHF tracking.
- Camera trap deployment and image classification.
- Box trapline and Sherman small‑mammal trap operation.
- Handling and collaring wild felid kittens, including chemical immobilization.
