Research Engineer / Research Scientist – Tokens

About the role

Anthropic is looking for a Research Engineer / Research Scientist focused on token‑level work. You will help build large‑scale, reliable, and steerable AI systems by contributing across the stack—from infrastructure to experimental code.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain high‑performance ML infrastructure and clusters.
• Improve throughput and efficiency of novel attention mechanisms and transformer variants.
• Run and design scientific experiments, including large‑scale ETL pipelines and distributed training jobs.
• Develop internal tooling, dev‑ops processes, and fault‑tolerance strategies.
• Collaborate with researchers through pair programming and code reviews.

Required profile

• Significant software engineering experience with a results‑oriented mindset.
• Willingness to take on tasks beyond the strict job description.
• Enjoys pair programming and collaborative problem solving.
• Interest in machine‑learning research and its societal impact.

Required skills

• Experience with GPUs and high‑performance computing.
• Proficiency with Kubernetes, PyTorch, and OS internals.
• Knowledge of language modeling using transformers.
• Familiarity with reinforcement learning and large‑scale ETL pipelines.
