Reference Librarian

About the role

The F. W. Olin Library at Northeastern's Oakland campus seeks a public‑service oriented librarian to join the Reference and Instruction team. Reporting to the Head of Reference and Access Services, the Reference Librarian will staff the Reference Desk, teach information literacy, and support academic departments.

Key responsibilities

• Manage reference activities, including staffing the Reference Desk and guiding users of physical and electronic collections.
• Create and maintain LibGuides, lead information‑literacy instruction sessions, and teach research strategies aligned with the ACRL framework.
• Select and deselect resources for assigned subject areas, develop thematic displays, and produce “Olin Recommends” booktalks.
• Support library programming, staff campus events, and administer library social‑media platforms.
• Oversee the Circulation Desk as needed, handle missing books, fines, and provide technology support.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in librarianship from an ALA‑accredited institution.
• 1–2 years of professional experience in an academic library.
• Effective teaching skills for both group and individual instruction.
• Strong communication, planning, organizational, and analytical abilities.
• Commitment to serving a diverse student population.

Required skills

• Familiarity with an integrated library system (ILS); Ex Libris Alma preferred.
• Proficiency with library hardware and software, including personal computers, Apple products, and printers.
