Public Safety Officer

About the role

The Public Safety Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, patients, visitors and employees at Saint Louis University. This role involves patrolling campus, responding to emergencies, and enforcing university policies while collaborating with local law‑enforcement agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle, providing assistance and direction to campus community members.
• Confront and question suspicious individuals; report incidents to the St. Louis Police Department.
• Monitor and report safety hazards, recommending prevention measures and equipment.
• Investigate criminal offenses, prepare reports, and arrest or detain offenders as authorized.
• Respond to fire and security alarms, providing initial fire rescue and emergency medical care until city services arrive.
• Support visiting dignitaries and special guests, ensuring their security during events.
• Assist other public safety agencies operating on campus and lead or participate in crowd‑control and tactical units as needed.
• Investigate vehicle accidents on university property and enforce traffic and parking regulations.
• Provide field training to junior officers and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Physical and psychological fitness to handle emergency situations.
• Ability to complete department‑prescribed training within a six‑month probationary period.
• Capability to respond promptly to emergency call‑ins and exercise supervisory authority on scene.
