People Operations Manager

About the role

Transluce is a non-profit research lab building tools to oversee AI and steer its development for the public good. It is growing from 20 to 40+ employees over the next 12 months and is hiring its first dedicated People/HR hire, reporting directly to the Chief of Staff. The role is hybrid, based in the San Francisco office four days a week, and is an individual-contributor position where you design the systems and run them day to day.

Key responsibilities

• Hiring: own the hiring process end-to-end (candidate communications, scheduling, program management, funnel analysis) and shape the sourcing strategy; lead searches for scarce technical and research talent
• People: build onboarding for the first week, run benefits, payroll and HRIS, set policies and practices, and advise on performance, conflict and employee relations
• Compliance: decide what to handle in-house versus escalate to outside counsel, and manage leaves, accommodations, worker classification, visas, licenses, registrations and training deadlines

Required profile

• Has owned hiring rounds end-to-end with hiring managers and has strong foundational HR knowledge
• Has personally run core people operations such as payroll, benefits, onboarding and visas
• Strong interpersonal skills, honesty, care and discretion, and excellent written and verbal communication
• 4+ years running people operations, ideally at a growing startup or nonprofit; experience scaling a people function and running searches for technical or research talent is a plus
