Pathologists’ Assistant – Clinical Laboratory

About the role

The Pathologists’ Assistant supports accurate and timely diagnoses by independently examining, describing, dissecting, and preparing surgical specimens for histologic evaluation. Working within CLIA regulations, CAP standards, and institutional policies, the role ensures high‑quality specimen handling and regulatory compliance. The position operates on the Main Campus of Cleveland Clinic, collaborating closely with pathologists and laboratory staff.

Key responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, and dissection of human surgical specimens for holding, transport, and shipment.
• Prepare and procure fresh tissue for cytologic and ancillary studies.
• Enter and maintain accession information, test results, and documentation in laboratory information systems.
• Conduct high‑complexity laboratory testing, quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and corrective actions.
• Maintain laboratory instrumentation, equipment, and work areas according to manufacturer specifications and laboratory standards.
• Provide training, supervision, and mentorship to pathology residents, Pathologists’ Assistant students, and other clinical learners.

Required profile

• Master’s degree from an NAACLS‑accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program and eligibility for ASCP certification, or a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Chemistry with training to meet ASCP Board certification qualifications.
• Minimum two years of experience as a certified Pathologists’ Assistant (PA, ASCP).
• Diploma and/or transcripts required; foreign education must be evaluated by an HHS‑approved agency.
• Physical ability to handle specimens, use instrumentation, and perform extensive standing, walking, and lifting.

Required skills
