Part-Time Clerk Supervisor, Grade B - Library Circulation

About the role

Hofstra University, a private university in Hempstead, New York, is hiring a Part-Time Clerk Supervisor, Grade B for its Library Operations department (Circulation/Periodicals). Reporting to the Vice Dean for Administrative and User Services, the supervisor provides friendly, effective customer service to library patrons and helps with circulation, reserve and periodicals transactions. The position is part-time, with Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday shifts from 5pm to 11pm, subject to bumping.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with check-out and check-in of library materials, including study rooms.
• Provide basic information and directional assistance to library users, in person and by telephone, and answer calls and direct callers appropriately.
• Monitor security and facilities in the building on nights and weekends and report problems to Public Safety.
• Supervise student aides.
• Record departmental statistics.
• Help with collection maintenance projects, such as pulling and shifting books and periodicals and processing those selected for relocation or withdrawal.
• Perform other duties of the same skill level as those listed.

Required profile

• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to exercise initiative and judgment and work independently.
• Preferred: knowledge of general library operations.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Word.
