Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Full Time

About the role

The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician 1 to support eye‑care providers in a fast‑paced clinical environment. The role involves performing a wide range of ophthalmic tests, documenting findings in the EMR, and ensuring patient safety and comfort.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and document visual field testing, intraocular pressure measurements (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care), pachymetry, and ocular motility exams.
• Conduct visual acuity, color vision, lensometry, refraction, stereopsis, and sensorimotor assessments.
• Administer eye drops, manage contact lens insertion/removal, and prepare patients for intravitreal injections.
• Maintain accurate patient records in the electronic medical record system and ensure equipment calibration.
• Support providers during virtual care encounters and travel to satellite eye centers as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of relevant ophthalmic or clinical experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Professional appearance, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work with patients of all ages.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems for patient documentation.
