About the role

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) seeks an Open Records Specialist to manage public‑access requests under the Texas Public Information Act and related statutes. Working on‑site in Austin, you will ensure timely, compliant responses while handling sensitive information securely.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, process, and respond to open records requests from the public, journalists, and researchers.
• Locate, gather, and review records—including emails, reports, and meeting minutes—ensuring compliance with legal guidelines.
• Redact confidential or legally protected information before release.
• Calculate and assess any applicable charges for records requests.
• Maintain detailed logs of requests, timelines, and compliance metrics.
• Coordinate with all agency divisions to gather required information.
• Cross‑train backup staff on records request procedures and systems.
• Compose, edit, and draft correspondence, memoranda, and reports using word‑processing tools.

Required profile

• Ability to travel up to 10% and engage in face‑to‑face interactions.
• Consistent attendance during authorized work hours and willingness to work extended hours when needed.
• Understanding of state and federal public‑access laws and Texas A&M University System policies.

Required skills

• Proficiency with word‑processing software.
• Database management for tracking requests and compliance data.
