About the role

The Surgical Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) Program provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for all aspects of living donor liver transplantation at the University of Miami.

Key responsibilities

• Perform complex living donor hepatectomies (right lobe, left lobe, left lateral segment) and recipient implantations, including redo and combined organ procedures.
• Lead program development, define strategic vision, expand donor/recipient volumes, and introduce new surgical techniques such as laparoscopic/robotic donor hepatectomy.
• Ensure regulatory compliance as Transplant Program Director with UNOS/OPTN, oversee accreditation, and manage data submission.
• Chair the Living Donor Selection Committee, standardize evaluation pathways, and oversee long‑term donor follow‑up.
• Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers; develop transplant surgery fellowship curriculum.
• Collaborate with hospital administration on resource allocation, budgeting, and operational efficiency.

Required profile

• MD or DO with general surgery residency and transplant surgery fellowship (ASTS‑accredited preferred).
• Board certified or board‑eligible in Surgery and unrestricted medical license in the state of practice.
• Minimum 5 years as an attending transplant surgeon with an active living donor liver program and sufficient volume to meet UNOS Key Personnel requirements.
• Record of peer‑reviewed scholarship and national conference participation.

Required skills

• Expertise in living donor hepatectomy (right and left lobe).
• Experience with minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic or robotic‑assisted donor hepatectomy.
• Knowledge of quality‑improvement methodologies (IHI, Lean Six Sigma or equivalent).
• Proficiency in transplant program regulatory compliance (UNOS/OPTN, MPSC, CMS).
