Non-Kinetic Effects Software & AI/ML Applications Specialist

About the role

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland seeks specialists to develop software and AI/ML applications that support non‑kinetic effect decision‑support systems. The role contributes to government‑sponsored projects that integrate information warfare, open‑source intelligence, and foreign‑language data into modeling & simulation and artificial intelligence solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and test application components, data pipelines, and modeling & simulation modules using Python or other modern object‑oriented languages.
• Set up AI tools and Agentic AI harnesses to enable research tasks for scientists.
• Document code, deliverables, and adhere to ARLIS processes and policies.
• Design, develop, and deploy end‑to‑end applications, including API integration between Agentic AI and M&S platforms.
• Present results at internal and external research forums and contribute to proposal development.
• Mentor junior Faculty Research Specialists and students.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s (FRS) or Master’s (Senior FRS) degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
• Strong analytical and multitasking abilities, with experience troubleshooting system errors.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python and other modern object‑oriented languages.
• Experience with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and scikit‑learn.
• Familiarity with modeling & simulation platforms (e.g., Mesa, Stella, Vensim).
• Knowledge of cloud architectures, Docker containerization, and API development.
• Use of Microsoft Office products for documentation and reporting.
