Job description
About the role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to lead product development of next‑generation automated robotic installation tools. The role involves taking concepts through design, prototyping, and production while collaborating with global 3M teams.
Key responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design and development from concept to production for robotic installation tools.
- Create precision mechanisms and assemblies using 3D CAD (SolidWorks).
- Design enclosures, components, and assemblies for robustness, serviceability and field reliability.
- Integrate motors, drives, encoders and sensors with mechanical assemblies, working closely with electronics and controls engineers.
- Develop motion and actuation concepts and support servo/torque‑motor and EtherCAT‑based control system integration.
- Perform engineering analyses such as tolerance stack‑up, kinematics, structural, thermal and load studies.
- Assemble, characterize, calibrate and troubleshoot mechanical prototypes and engineering builds.
- Select and specify components, materials and finishes, balancing performance, cost and manufacturability.
- Generate detailed mechanical documentation including drawings, GD&T, BOMs and design records.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers and external partners to scale designs into production.
- Interact with regulatory teams to ensure compliance with safety and machinery standards.
- Contribute to intellectual property creation through invention disclosures and patents.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- Experience designing mechanical systems for automated or robotic applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional global teams.
Required skills
- SolidWorks (3D CAD)
- Mechanical design and GD&T
- Motion control concepts (servo/torque motors, EtherCAT)
- Engineering analysis (tolerance stack‑up, kinematics, structural, thermal, load)
- Prototype assembly, testing and troubleshooting
- Component selection and material specification
