Manufacturing Technology Engineer (Inspection & Converting)

About the role

The Automated Inspection and Measurement group at 3M is seeking a Manufacturing Technology Engineer to design, integrate, and support smart slitting and converting systems. You will work with advanced vision, inspection, and automation technologies to improve productivity, yield, and quality across manufacturing sites.

Key responsibilities

• Design, integrate, commission, and support fully automated slitters that use upstream web inspection data for recipe management, cut planning, defect avoidance, and dynamic process control.
• Translate inspection data into actionable converting strategies such as roll mapping, defect classification, cut optimization, process parameter selection, and closed‑loop control.
• Develop and implement automated inspection solutions using optics, machine vision, image processing, data analytics, and AI/ML.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, process engineering, controls, quality, operations, and equipment suppliers to solve complex challenges and deploy robust technology solutions.
• Provide on‑site support for smart converting and inspection systems, including troubleshooting, performance optimization, system upgrades, operator training, documentation, and reliability improvements.
• Travel to production locations and participate in on‑call support to ensure system uptime.

Required profile

• Experience designing, integrating, and supporting automated manufacturing systems.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally with diverse engineering and operations teams.
• Willingness to travel to multiple production sites and provide on‑call support.
