Legal Counsel – Claims Litigation

About the role

Travelers is seeking a Counsel to join its national legal team, focusing on claims defense. The attorney will act as a trusted advisor, handling litigation from inception through trial, appeal, and settlement for policyholders and the company.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of low to moderate‑complexity claims, developing litigation strategies and negotiating resolutions.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other court documents.
• Attend court events, depositions, and client meetings independently.
• Provide case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claim partners.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Utilize case‑management technology and automation tools effectively.
• Travel as needed to support business requirements.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of insurance defense litigation experience as a practicing attorney.
• Proven ability to handle cases from inception through trial, hearing, and appeal independently.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal matters to diverse audiences.
• Experience advising claim partners and providing training on litigation processes.

Required skills

• Legal research and persuasive legal writing.
• Drafting of pleadings, motions, briefs, and discovery documents.
• Case management system utilization.
