About the role
AIS, Inc. is seeking a Lead Observer Coordinator to oversee the observer cadre across the New England region. The role ensures successful completion of sea‑day assignments while supporting safety, logistics, and data quality for federal and state fisheries programs.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate observer trips with vessel captains, schedule deployments, and manage travel logistics from North Carolina to Maine.
- Conduct captain interviews for at least 10% of trips and supervise observers on‑site and remotely.
- Maintain observer web portal and PTNS updates within two hours of embarkation or disembarkation.
- Provide pre‑ and post‑trip support, including safety checks, data submission, and enforcement issue reporting.
- Monitor InReach communications, approve timesheets and expenses, and complete weekly reports and sea‑day trackers.
- Attend training sessions, scientific conferences, and present program results.
- Deploy as an observer or biological port sampler when needed to retain certification.
Required profile
- Current or eligible NMFS Certified Fisheries Observer.
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related field.
- Experience with NEFOP certifications and fisheries monitoring operations.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, holidays, and on‑call 24‑hour availability.
Required skills
- Proficiency with observer web portal and PTNS data entry systems.
