Law Clerk Spring Externship (Hybrid, Oakland)

About the role

UnCommon Law is seeking motivated law students for a Spring 2027 Law Clerk externship. This hybrid, part‑time role in Oakland offers hands‑on experience supporting attorneys in parole hearings and legal research for incarcerated clients.

Key responsibilities

• Assist attorneys with client communications, draft follow‑up letters, and provide feedback on client writings.
• Prepare and attend legal visits, phone calls, and assemble parole packets for the Board of Parole Hearings.
• Conduct legal research, write memos on policy issues, review case and prison records, and draft habeas petitions.
• Maintain and update client contact records and the organization’s legal database.
• Compile resources such as housing and employment information for clients.

Required profile

• Compassion for incarcerated individuals and interest in criminal‑justice reform.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Professional demeanor with attention to confidentiality.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with Google Suite.
• Familiarity with CRM software (preferred).
