Lactation Consultant – PRN (Day/Evening)

About the role

The Lactation Consultant provides direct lactation support, education, and instruction to breastfeeding mothers and their infants across all inpatient and outpatient units at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. This PRN position works a flexible schedule, typically between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with a requirement to complete 48 hours within a six‑week period.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct lactation care and instruction to breastfeeding mothers and infants.
• Perform initial and ongoing assessments of the mother‑baby dyad’s lactation goals and issues.
• Develop evidence‑based feeding plans addressing feeding challenges.
• Design and implement patient education, caregiver development, and community outreach programs.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of current lactation theories and research.
• Complete newborn hearing screenings and submit metabolic screening samples to the laboratory.
• Work varying hours based on patient needs, ensuring 48 hours of service within a six‑week period.

Required profile

• Meets educational/licensing requirements for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or Red Cross.
• Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification or equivalent upon hire, with successful IBCLC certification within 24 months.
• Preferred: Registered Nurse (RN) credential.
• Preferred: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within six months of hire.
• One year of hospital or community‑based nursing experience working with breastfeeding mothers and infants, or equivalent lay experience under IBCLC supervision.
• Experience developing and delivering staff education related to breastfeeding management and lactation care.
