Lab Technician III – Surgical Pathology

About the role

The Histology team at Cleveland Clinic prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination, often while the patient is still in surgery. This position is responsible for accurate entry of specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and handling biological materials with extreme attention to detail.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, accession, and process specimens, including frozen sections, cell blocks, and clinical histology embedding.
• Perform advanced manual processing tasks such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and routine equipment maintenance.
• Enter and track specimen data in the LIS, conduct higher‑level accessioning, and resolve LIS logs and tracking investigations.
• Serve as a subspecialty client liaison, handling problem investigations, issue resolution, and quality assurance activities.

Required profile

• Associate degree in a science field (or equivalent experience).
• Two years of laboratory processing experience (four years of lab technician experience may substitute education).
• Ability to work independently, maintain high accuracy, and handle bio‑hazardous materials safely.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and data entry.
• Experience with histology techniques: frozen section processing, slide creation, cell block preparation.
• Use of tracking software/devices and basic laboratory equipment (centrifuge, aliquoting tools).
• Knowledge of safety SOPs, bio‑hazard handling, and personal protective equipment.
