Junior IT Network Engineer – Edge Network

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking a Junior IT Network Engineer to support the campus wired and wireless infrastructure. You will assist faculty, staff, and students with network connectivity, troubleshooting, and equipment deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Implement, monitor, and support wired and wireless networks across campus.
• Activate network jacks, install copper and fiber optic connections, and configure switches and wireless access points.
• Troubleshoot DHCP, DNS, and VPN services.
• Deploy and replace network infrastructure equipment.
• Utilize network management systems and support Network Operations Center (NOC) functions.
• Perform on‑call duties and respond to emergencies, including after‑hours work.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent experience).
• Zero or limited professional experience in IT infrastructure support.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Strong customer‑service orientation and ability to follow senior guidance.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a state vehicle.

Required skills

• Wired switch configuration and troubleshooting.
• Wireless access point configuration and troubleshooting.
• Copper and optical (fiber) cabling installation.
• DHCP, DNS, and VPN troubleshooting.
• Network monitoring and management systems.
• Familiarity with Office 365 or Google Workspaces.
