IT Network Engineer

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking a mid‑level IT Network Engineer to join the Network Engineering team. In this role you will help plan, design, implement and maintain both wired and wireless network infrastructure that supports the university’s research and educational missions.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and design network improvements and new capabilities.
• Implement and support network components including copper and fiber cabling, routers, switches, traffic shapers, VPN systems, firewalls, IPS, load balancers, VoIP and wireless infrastructure.
• Maintain comprehensive network documentation such as design documents, as‑built diagrams, test plans and run‑books.
• Present technical designs and training to mixed‑skill audiences and mentor colleagues as needed.
• Participate in an on‑call rotation and provide after‑hours support when required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent experience).
• At least three years of professional experience in network design, implementation and escalation support.
• Ability to interpret policies, procedures and regulations while delivering strong customer service.

Required skills

• Network design and implementation over WAN.
• Experience with routers, switches, traffic shapers, VPN, firewalls, IPS, load balancers, VoIP and wireless technologies.
• Knowledge of scalable network architectures.
• Proficiency with Google Workspace for collaboration.
