Healthcare Interpreter - Spanish

About the role

Cleveland Clinic Health System is hiring a Spanish-speaking Healthcare Interpreter for its Main Campus, within the International and Emerging Markets department. Interpreters support patients and caregivers by relaying medical information between speakers of two languages in consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes, while respecting patient confidentiality and informed consent. The position is a day shift, 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Key responsibilities

• Help deliver services to linguistically diverse patients and explain hospital procedures, protocols and limitations to clinicians and patients, and make appropriate referrals.
• Act as a cultural and linguistic resource for patients and providers.
• Provide written transcriptions, such as forms, medication instructions and schedules, letters and patient materials.
• Support office operations: answering phones, scheduling appointments, documenting encounters, entering data, troubleshooting, filing and photocopying.
• Work an on-call rotation to assist the department.

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• One year of experience as an interpreter.
• Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages, spoken and written.
• Ability to work in consecutive mode and sight translate into and from the working language(s).
• Familiarity with patients of diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Valid state driver's license and automobile insurance.

Required skills

• Strong medical vocabulary.
• Knowledge of computer systems.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a science or human services field, CHI or CMI certification, and professional medical interpreting experience.
